Finally there is what is known as ‘The Queue’. As queues go it is decidedly regimented: you are given a dated and numbered card to show your position in it; the police and local authorities give permission for people to queue overnight and the Honorary Stewards of the Championships operate a Code of Conduct in the event of disputes. But it does mean that a lucky few hundred people will be able to buy tickets for the show courts on the day of play – an unusual state of affairs for an internationally acclaimed sporting event, most of which sell out months in advance.

No such pressure applies to admission to the ground, however. Tickets are much easier to come by and, during the first week at least, you have every chance of seeing some top players on the ‘outside’ courts.

Even now that Centre Court has a retractable roof, the Great British summer weather can play havoc with the schedule, so it is never possible to guarantee what match you are going to see. This can, however, work to your advantage: a friend of Her Ladyship’s, with scant interest in the ladies’ game, was invited to Ladies’ Finals day and, thanks to the rain that had fallen earlier in the week, was also treated to a delayed men’s semi-final between, as it happened, the two top-ranking players in the world.
